Children today have their noses in their electronics. Of course, technology is direction the world is going, but let's not forget books, and the skills to think, rationalize and find solutions to problems, without the help of a machine.
In my class, I promote team work, and a mindset of persistence by trying, and if it doesn't work, trying it again a new way.
I am teaching them ways to learn from each other to find ways that they may not have thought of on their own. I try to provide my students with fun yet challenging activities that strengthen their ability to become independent thinker and exploratory learners. As a Title 1 school, they may have limited opportunities outside of school to explore new places and new things, so I try to broaden their reach in our classroom.
For many years, the main focus of education was on literacy. Finally, there has been a realization that math is not a natural-born talent, but a teachable skill. Math is not just formulas and a one-size-fits-all number manipulation. Math is strategy, creative thinking, analysis, problem solving, and critical-thinking. It exercises the brain and thus strengthens its ability to think logically from different angles in order to solve a problem. What is amazing about all the different possibilities for solving a single mathematical problem, is that they all will come to the same conclusion.
Math Centers will encourage individual explorations.
Multi-step math problem cards with give them practice determining what information they need to solve the problem, and how to use the information that was given to find the answer. The Power Pen will give them immediate feedback so they will know if their answer is correct or if they need to go back and recalculate. Spot the Error! center cards will give them experience analyzing a problem that has already been solved and find where the mistake was made. Did they choose the wrong information from the problem, or the wrong operation? Did they make an error during the operation, for instance, did they forget to regroup or miscount? Visualize It! Part-Whole cards will help them break numbers into place values, and help them find the missing part of a problem by adding or subtracting.
These materials will stimulate creativity, broaden skills and foster character development. By working independently or collaborating with a partner to solve a multiple step math problem, they will learn teamwork, strategy, reasoning and how to look at things from multiple angles to get to a desired conclusion.
