Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are resilient because they have to be. They come from families with very little to give. I work at and my students attend a Title I school where the majority get free and reduced price lunch. Due to Hurricane Harvey, many of my students have lost their homes and are doubled up with relatives in order to survive on a day-to-day basis.
I am aware of the types of issues my students deal with at home, although I do not know all of the details.
What I do know is that I can create an inviting learning environment in my classroom where students are free to make mistakes that foster learning. I will and continue to try my best at doing all that I can to make their school experience as comfortable as possible.
My Project
My kids love to read and they also enjoy working math problems. I have found that a fun way to incorporate both is by reading aloud children's literature that relates to what lesson or unit we are learning in class. My students enjoy listening to the stories that are humorous and engaging. I feel as though these books will inspire and motivate my students to be open to math if they may have needed a little encouragement to keep trying. Math can be a tough subject for some, however my hope is that I can spark the interest of a child by finding new ways to spice up the subject in any way.
