This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
What if a backpack could improve a child's understanding of math? What if children could bring home an opportunity to increase their math skills and also have fun learning with their families?
I teach 28 gifted students in an urban public school.
They come from many neighborhoods and have varying levels of resources available to them at home. They are incredibly curious and love playing games. My students go home every night and share their excitement about the new topics they are learning with their families. They know that practice helps their brains grow and work very hard every day to become better mathematicians.
My Project
My students need 6 backpacks filled with engaging math materials, such as Fraction Matchin, Sumoku, Math Dice, math card games and math mysteries. I want to compile six rotating math backpacks. Each backpack will be filled with an engaging math book, at least one math game, a notebook, and a folder. Students will take turns bringing home one math backpack for a week at a time. Once at home, the students will play the games included in the backpack, read the book with a family member, and create a math problem for the next person who gets the backpack to solve. Parents will also have a chance to fill out an evaluation about the contents of the backpack and how they used them with their child. The backpacks will have themes of fractions, multiplication, division, geometry, problem solving, and general math skills.
This project will give parents and children an engaging way to learn math together.
Students will get a chance to apply what they have learned in school to fun activities at home. Without these materials, my students will miss out on an opportunity to improve their math skills on their way to becoming better mathematicians.
