My students need games such as Jenga and Uno and Battleship and activities such as two sets of Snap Circuits Kits, three Foam Glider Assortment sets and two NADA Games,to practice math skills with their families at home.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When I asked a student last year, "What was your favorite school activity this year?, she replied, "Family Math and Science Night." She was the only one who said that. This year, I want more students to pick that as their favorite.
The students are vibrant, young people who struggle with academic motivation.
Many are English Language Learners and come from low-income households. Whatever their struggles, they are heroic in their perseverance to experience life. As typical middle schoolers, they question rules, guidelines and often learn lessons the hard way.
In math classes, especially, during middle school, students start to lose interest in academics and motivation that school is important. Family Math and Science Night is one way we try to inspire them. all students.
My Project
My students need games such as Jenga and Uno and Battleship and activities such as two sets of Snap Circuits Kits, three Foam Glider Assortment sets and two NADA Games,to practice math skills with their families at home. These materials are for a math and science career themed Family Math and Science Night (FMSN) to be held in February. There are activities, games and decorations that can make our school event better than it has ever been.
Families and students will get to learn about and experience the type of math involved in various careers, such as an air traffic controller or an attorney. At the end of the night, there will be a free raffle in which students can win games to take home and play with their families.
This event has multiple purposes.
One, it involves students in math and science in a real world context. Two, students are inspired to make more of an effort in academics. Three, families participate together in academic activities, which I hope they continue at home. Four, the community gets to see some of the wondering things going on at Parkway.
