This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Please help me make science and math content exciting and meaningful for my 27 first grade kiddos!
I love my job because I work at an amazing school with amazing students!
I teach first grade in a Title I school in Utah. This means that the majority of my students come from low-income families. My students also come from diverse cultural backgrounds. Most of my students are English Language Learners. Some are brand new to the country and are just starting to learn English this year.
My Project
Math:
Teaching double-digit addition and subtraction with traditional algorithms can be very confusing because it doesn't give students a conceptual understanding. That is why I would like to have a class set of base ten math manipulatives. This way students can actually create the numbers and see for themselves how a group of ten is created when adding, or why borrowing is necessary when subtracting.
Science:
The Orbiter shows my students a concrete physical model of the orbital paths of the Earth and the Moon. My students will be planting the Brassica Rapa seeds this winter to explore the lifecycle of plants. The hissing roaches will give my students the opportunity to observe living animals in their habitat right inside our classroom!
Art:
I teach an integrated math or science art project every week. I need supplies specifically markers, oil pastels and paper to use for these lessons.
Hands on learning is paramount with my student population because having real life experiences gives them greater access to the content being taught.
This is especially true of my students who have limited English abilities. Thank you for enriching my students learning environment!
