I love my job because I work at an amazing school with amazing students. I teach first grade in a Title One school in Utah. This means that the majority of my students come from low-income families. My students also come from diverse cultural backgrounds. Many students in my class are English Language Learners, some are brand new to the country and are just starting to learn English this year. Learning to read is paramount in first grade but can be especially challenging for my students. This is largely because my students have little opportunity to learn how to read outside of school. Most of my students have little to no books at home. Also, a large portion of my students parents do not speak English so they are unable to read to their children in English. Therefore, the majority of learning to read happens at school.
