Help me give my students the tools they need to understand mathematics concepts with manipulatives such as peg number boards, file folder activities, and magnetic answer boards to make abstract concepts more concrete and understandable.
The students in the high needs, special education program are all working on the skills they will need to live independent, safe and purposeful lives. Each student comes with a specific set of skills that we hope to help nurture, as well as a set of unique needs that need to be met to help them reach their goals.
Our students' classrooms are their safe haven where they know their communication style is understood, where they can calm their sensory system and where they can learn the skills they need to live as independently as possible one day.
We strive to maintain this safe space for the students to continue to learn and grow. Within these walls, we work on all academic areas, learn skills for becoming adults, work in our garden, create beautiful art projects and learn lifelong skills like cooking and cleaning.
My Project
For students who are visual learners, having objects and manipulatives to support more abstract concepts is a necessary and amazing tool. We hope to use items such as the math file folder games, the white/magnetic boards, the bingo dotters, and the other tools to make math concepts understandable and relatable so my students with all levels of skills are able to participate.
By providing additional tools to support basic mathematic concepts, it makes the material meaningful and manageable for students with varying disabilities.
My students will use these tools to better grasp concepts that will help them lead more independent and full lives.
