Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Even with their backgrounds, they come to school ready to learn and show their excitement for learning daily. With that, this group is very inquisitive, creative and energetic. They thrive on challenges and collaboration.

This group of students is very special to me because they challenge me to change my way of teaching, to find a way to reach all of them no matter what level they are at.

They have a variety of learning levels, from kindergarten to fourth grade. They arrive at school every day with smiles on their faces, kind words to everyone they meet, and challenges in their home lives. For these students to come to school, eager to learn can be a challenge but they face this challenge with ease and excitement. School is a place to make mistakes, have fun, learn, and laugh and we do all of this together every day.

My Project

Math is a very straight forward skill, yet kids have difficulties with remembering what 1x1 is. This is what I am encountering this year with my current students. Kids today enjoy games and so I am trying to mesh the two together through this project.

Through games, students will have the repetition and interest in learning various math and reading skills so that when they become adults these skills will stick with them.

Kids need repeated drill and practice to learn their math facts, however, it really has to be in a way where it is engaging and fun. This project will do just that. The math learning center games are games. Not only do the games teach social-emotional learning, but they also focus on specific skill which is repeated throughout the entire game. With the use of the Power Pens!, students will have the opportunity to work on math and read skills independently. Each student will know if they are successful and are able to strive for the goal of meeting the standards. This creates student choice which is very important in my classroom.
