The children in my classroom need a safe, comfortable place that has all the tools for success, since they spend seven hours a day, five days a week in school. I teach in an inner city school with a high poverty rate.
Many of these families are struggling to provide the basic needs for survival on a day-to-day basis.
These loving parents and grandparents do not have the resources to provide the life-enriching experiences that so many of us take for granted. In addition, several of the children in my classroom are experiencing educational challenges due to a variety of factors, including learning disabilities, developmental delays, and severe emotional issues due to circumstances beyond their control. Consequently, these children are struggling to keep up with their peers from more affluent communities. These little ones need our help and support.
My Project
This math fluency kit is basically a teacher's dream. It has all of the materials to help young learners "see" math and help them become competent mathematical thinkers.
Using these manipulatives will enhance student learning so they can gain a deeper understanding of the math concepts taught at such a young age.
Through the use of these materials, students will be verbalizing mathematical thinking as they discuss their math ideas and concepts. They will be working cooperatively and collaborate on their learning. Students will be taking ownership of their new learning experiences as they gain confidence with the math concepts.
When math is presented in a way that students can actually see what they are learning, their understanding becomes stronger.
Manipulatives are the key to successful and effective lessons when teaching mathematics. Manipulatives help students learn by allowing them to move from concrete experiences to abstract reasoning.
