This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Hello, my name is Tamara Peters and I am a Kindergarten teacher at a Title I school in East San Diego County. My class is very diverse and includes newcomers, refugees, English learners, and students with special needs. What they all have in common is an innate love of learning and they come to school every day with a smile on their face. The diversity in my students' backgrounds requires me to be creative when designing instruction that meets the needs of all my learners.
Kindergarten already has high academic expectations and trying to hit all of the goals can be difficult, however, art is something that is often left out or overlooked.
I believe strongly that art, creativity, and expression engage students. Although I try my best to include art in the classroom, it is my mission to add more art supplies and books in my class so my children have free reign to explore and create! Having limited books and art supplies makes this very difficult to achieve. In order to inspire a love of reading and art will help to support their growth, my students deserve a well-stocked library and art station with appropriate books and art supplies for every moment. Having been teaching for a while I often re-buy many books and art support throughout the school year but due to constant use, I always need to replace them. As it stands now I just don't have enough books or crayons appropriate for my Kindergarteners. Kindergarten is really where it all begins and students will need many opportunities to experience and interact with books. I am looking to build a rich library and art nook that will allow my students to become fully immersed in positive hands-on learning.
