I teach 6th-8th grade Special Education students in an inclusion setting at an inner city K-8 school. Though I work with all teachers, focus is primarily in the areas of ELA and Mathematics.

A common goal for students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) with deficits in the area of written expression is to develop/increase grammar and usage skills. Specific instructional objectives may include identifying/using different types of sentences and constructing a grammatically correct sentence... working toward developing/increasing composition skills by writing a paragraph which incorporates sequencing. To assist my students in their goals, I want to give them a project that will: offer a visual, concrete approach to each lesson which they will create and manipulate; provide activities that relate to their world and experiences; encourage the creative writing process.

With the use of a digital camera and printer, students will begin by taking individual pictures of a subject that interests them, printing them in the classroom and then learning about and creating "Masterpiece Sentences" (expressive, colorful and grammatically correct written descriptions) about the picture. Once mastered, this activity will be followed with each individual taking a series of pictures, writing a "Masterpiece Sentence" for each and then sequencing the pictures and sentences into a paragraph and/or essay.

Your support will make this experience possible for my students and provide a basis for further instruction into different styles of writing following the same photo/"Masterpiece Sentence" format.
