As a 3rd grade teacher, I want my students to have access to any and every flavor of ice-cream (or type of math) there is!!
The students I teach are so unique, each with their own struggles, strengths, and needs.
I have exceptional children, academically gifted students, English learners, and military connected students, whom all come from diverse family backgrounds (low-income, single parent, traditional, and non-traditional). There are even some families who are still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Florence.
My Project
My students experience a lot of "firsts" in third grade: their first year of EOGs, "real" grades, awards ceremonies, the "big-kid" playground, and so on. Another "first" that most of them come to 3rd grade eager about, is learning multiplication! In today's technology-driven world, there is an increasing presence of "screen-time" within education (computer assessments, online programs/lessons, learning videos, etc.); however, we need to keep this in balance with hands-on learning, especially when it comes to math!
Math can be a tricky subject for some, and being able to see and manipulate concrete objects is very important in helping those students to be successful in the classroom.
Due to this, I want to make it fun and enjoyable for my students to learn and practice their math skills in multiple, various ways.
The materials I've requested for this project will help me build a math games center for my students. Multiplication especially, is a skill that takes much repeated practice to master, so it can quickly become boring to students (worksheets, flashcards, drills, etc.); therefore, the majority of the materials focus on multiplication, along with some fractions, division, etc. Also, I have lowered two of our classroom trapezoid tables down to the floor, as my students enjoy sitting or kneeling while working. Because of this, I've also requested some wobble cushions for them to use at these tables.
