Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a variety of different Latin American backgrounds with over 99% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also one of the poorest schools in the Metro Atlanta area. The majority of the students in our school are English Language Learners trying to learn English and the American culture as they get acclimated to the school environment. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. Presently, they are striving to make it to first grade.
My Project
Mastering Kindergarten skills is a huge milestone for my students. This is perhaps the biggest change that can be seen in them from the beginning to the end of the year. There are so many skills to learn to get ready for First Grade. Reading, writing and math skills do not come easily when you are also learning to speak English. My students just need a little push to get there.
I've selected some DVD's that will help them with their sight words, reading and math skills.
I plan on using these items during center time, where students can visually see and practice. The writing paper I will be using during Writer's Workshop, as we continue to practice writing stories. It is during Writer's Workshop when I use the different colored gel pens. Students love it when I use my pens to help them correctly spell words. The books on CD's will be using during Listening Center time. where students learn to follow along and practice reading words they already know. I have requested velcro dots to use for phonics file folder games that I create. These folders are a fun and engaging way to have students learn their letters and sounds.
I am excited about being able to offer my students a way to practice important skills!
