Masking Gum Silhouette Watercolor Painting

Help me give my students this unique material that students paint on watercolor paper to mask off shapes and silhouettes in order to do a background watercolor wash.

My Project

I will be teaching several ninth grade painting classes this school year. I'm organizing unique watercolor projects and techniques that really make learning to watercolor fun. This project will require students to create a watercolor painting that incorporates drawing gum or masking gum. Masking gum is a removeable liquid used to mask off images or create silhouettes. Students paint a layer of masking gum over an image or shape and then do a watercolor wash in the background.

Once dry, the students will peel off the masking gum revealing a unique and professional watercolor.

My painting class is the most advanced visual arts class at our Junior High school and my students paint everyday. Every year I hope to create new projects that will help my students create very complex and creative paintings.
