When you think of school, you think of learning. But for my students, school is more than just for learning. It is a safe haven and a place where they can escape the harsh realities from home.
My 12 and 13 year-old students are more than young teenagers.
At home, they are caregivers to siblings, and cooks, and they often play an adult role. They come to school to escape the crimes, drugs, and secondary trauma all around them.
Given this, my desire is to create a classroom environment where all students can feel safe, respected, and valued. I know that our school is located in one of the toughest areas. The neighborhoods aren't safe; they are filled with drugs, gangs, and violence.
However, students show up every day ready to learn because they want to change the trajectory of their future. They want to end the generational curse. I want to be there alongside my students, helping them achieve their goals. I want to provide a haven for my students where they can forget about the chaos around them, even if for just a little while. Together, we can remove barriers and help lift our community!
We are returning to in-person instruction again this school year. After a three-week Winter Break and the new Omicron Variant, my students and I need to have the necessary resources to ensure that we can learn in a safe and healthy way.
Face masks are essentials, but often, students forget or lose their masks as the navigate from one class to the next.
We are in need of masks, desperately. We went through the last week of school before winter break without any reserves left of masks, and as a result many students couldn't attend instruction in-person.
Please help keep us all safe and provide us with masks in the midst of a new surge in the pandemic.
