This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember the first time you made a drawing, a painting, or got your hands all gooey from paper mache? It is a magical process to make something out of nothing. It is crucial our students get to experience the creative process using quality materials that our school cannot afford.
These students are inspiring!
Many of our students come from diverse backgrounds such as Somalia, Ethiopia, and many Pacific Islander cultures. In addition to this global population we have many wonderful students from the neighborhood. The staff at this school intentionally create a fair and joyful environment for these beautiful students, many of which come from very challenging circumstances.
My Project
To quote one of my students, "The art room is my happy place." Since many of our students live in poverty and many deal with challenging situations in their lives, art can provide a valuable outlet as well as add enrichment to their learning. Incorporating cultural lessons that are relevant to their lives helps them feel proud of their culture and learn about each other in meaningful ways. Mask making is an art that reflects many cultures around the world. Students love doing 3-D projects around these cultural lessons. The plastic molds can be used with many students for many years that will support this learning. Printmaking and texture making are not only fun for students but teaches them about printing techniques originating in Japan and other Asian cultures.
My dream is these students can continue to have access to the arts to, not only support their academic core subjects, but to become joyful life long learners and use creative thinking skills in their everyday lives.
