Mask Magic to the Max

Help me give my students tools to make amazing masks! The mask project is a perennial favorite - let's make a mask again this year!

My Project

Students have made plaster masks using plaster gauze, claycrete (a kind of shredded papier-mache that enables sculpting details to add to the mask), and a clear coat of varnish at the end, since before I took over the Art room in 2011. Students love it because it's fairly self-directed after they get started, it's very hands-on, and they have a glossy souvenier at the end that they can take home and hang on the wall.

This is our most popular prohect - and also my most costly project.

Students use at least a roll of plaster gauze each, and the big bag of claycrete is on the pricey side! Your donations enable the school to use monies for English Learners and Math acheivement, while still enabling our Art classes to engage in this fun and educational exploration of the mask - what a mask is, what the purpose of masking is, and to think about the masks we wear in our daily life. Thank you!
