My Students

My English 9 students attend a competitive, high performing school. They all work really hard to be successful. I am adding more independent reading to allow student choice, which I am hoping leads to more excited readers.

A central goal of English is to maintain a reading habit in the busy lives of students.

Reading is a foundational skill for leading a literate life. There are a number of reasons why students should become avid readers.

There is a lot of talk that “students today won’t read,” but I truly believe students substitute distractions (texting, Facebook, video games, TV, etc.) if they feel no passion for reading. It has been my experience, students who haven’t been readers since early elementary school will suddenly become quite passionate about reading with the right book in their hands.

My Project

My English 9 classes need some new books for our Memoir Literature Circle unit. It is important that they are able to make decisions about what they read. I am hoping to be able to offer them several choices. Some requested titles include Americanized: Rebel Without a Green Card, Rethinking Normal: A Memoir in Transition, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, The Year We Disappeared: A Father - Daughter Memoir, and I'm the One Who Got Away: A Memoir.

Some of my students are reluctant readers and I would like to provide them with high interest titles that they are excited to devour!

I have chosen books about overcoming obstacles and achieving goals and dreams against all odds. I have chosen books with both male and female points of view. There is something on this list for every reader.
