Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in Springfield, MA. We have the most hard working students in the city. Our first-grade students are curious and love to learn new things. Our student population is more than 90% economically disadvantaged. Despite challenges that many may face, students greet each day ready to learn, grow and do their best! Our classroom is their safe and secure environment where self-esteem, respect and cultural diversity are appreciated. Nurturing, loving and teaching the entire child is our daily goal.
My Project
My students come to first grade with all different mathematical abilities. My goal is to develop a math class that meets students at their level and takes them as far as they can go.
First graders work best with hands-on experiences, allowing their number sense and skill level to grow.
We work in small groups using tens frames and lap boards to work through problems. This allows me to quickly and easily assess students progress.
While I am working with small groups of children, others are working independently on individual math skills that are needed. The puzzles and manipulative allow children to stay engaged while working.
