My students need these math games., timers, and flashcards to learn and practice basic elementary math. Students with math delays need hands on materials to understand math concepts.
Learning math facts and concepts is a challenge for most children, but especially for those who have learning disabilities. Learning these facts and concepts is essential if students are going to be successful in math. My students need different modalities to learn facts with fluency.
I teach special needs students in kindergarten through fifth grade in a rural district in SC.
Eight out of ten students are from single parent economically disadvantaged homes. Most of these parents did not finish high school and are not able to help their children academically. Any extra materials I can send home or put in centers in the classroom are a great help. My children learn best with "hands on" activities. Students' abilities vary greatly teaching in a multigrade classroom. Students must learn to work in small groups and to work independently while the teacher is working with others. These materials would provide workshops as well as take home activities to share with a parent. Students can not advance in math unless they understand basic concepts and know the facts with fluency. Once they learn these facts they are empowered to tackle more challenging on grade level work. These materials would help close the gap between my students and on grade level peers.
My Project
I am requesting addition and subtraction flash cards, measurement kit, pattern cards, and missing addends flash cards that will enable my students to master essential math skills. Learning concepts and math facts will build self confidence and prepare my students for age appropriate math. I also requested Hot Dots and times to build math fluency and make learning fun. Students with learning difficulties need much more practice and different modalities to learn math concepts. Learning concepts and math facts will open up a new mathematical world for my students. They will be able to complete in the world with their same age peers.
This project is so important because it will enable my students to become "Math Super Stars!" Upper level math can be extremely challenging but it is impossible if students do not know the facts with fluency.

Learning math concepts and math facts is a life skill and the earlier they are mastered the better! My students are determined to work hard and close the gap between them and their peers. These materials will enable them to be successful!
