I teach in a self contained class where each student has an Individual Education Plan(IEP). My students are in first to fifth grade. Our school serves children who are low social economic status with 68% free and reduced lunch. Most of our parents are considered poverty working class, who make only enough money to keep a roof over their heads, lights and water. These students have not been read to and often have very limited vocabularies. Most of these children enter school with little or no phonemic awareness skills.
