Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students in the functional skills program range in age from 14-22 and present with a diagnosed intellectual disabilities similar to moderate cognitive impairments. They travel to and from high school with door to door transportation; due to their cognitive limitations, and the dangerous risks involved in traveling across the city via public transportation.

We aspire to teach our students the necessary adaptive life skills to be happy, successful, and contributing members of society.

They become "employees" in the school run Copy Center. They work recycling within the school. We are located close in proximity to a local hospital where they work as greeters.

Academically, it is vital for our students to gain the knowledge needed to be successful active members in society. They need to be able to access public transportation, make the appropriate change at a store, and to request help or clarification. Ideally, it would be wonderful if they could access the digital world in areas other than social media.

My Project

My students can use these manipulatives to grasp a math concept or to problem solve, then use them to explain the concept to a friend! These math manipulatives will provide not only the foundation to many math concepts, but allow students to explore and expand their knowledge for higher order of thinking!

These manipulatives will allow each student in the class to have their own manipulatives to learn many math concepts from addition and subtraction to shapes and angles!

Math is a critical need area and these manipulatives are just the thing to help get my students invested in strengthening their skills.
