Do you know a trapezoid from a rhombus? When you hear the word MATH does it bring back memories of monotonous math practice? I'll spare my students the drudgery of learning basic math facts by using motivating math fact games. My goal is to make learning geometry captivating instead of confounding
My students are in kindergarten - second grade and attend my enrichment class twice a week for 30 minutes because they are ready for more challenging skills.
This past year I had kindergarten students multiplying single digit numbers, first graders working on fractions, and second graders reading numbers in the trillions! They are proud of their academic accomplishments as well as motivated to tackle new math concepts.
Their school is located 25 miles south of Chicago. It serves a richly diverse community of about 600 students in preschool - second grade. Twenty-two percent of the students come from families receiving public aid while the balance come from lower to middle class families. The mission statement of the school is, "All children will learn, all children will be served." Your donation will help me fulfill this mighty mission.
My Project
The resources I've selected will inspire my students to practice basic math facts and geometry skills. The Ten Frame Answer Boards are shaped like a square paddle. Each board has a rectangle divided into 10 boxes; 5 boxes on the top and 5 boxes on the bottom. The kids place magnetic chips in the boxes to illustrate a number. This is a helpful tool to practice addition and subtraction facts for 10.
The Number Bond Cards, Part Whole Cards, and Operation Equivalency Puzzles are used to create fact families. The kids can learn the relationship between 2+3=5 and 5-3=2 along with 2x4=8 and 8/2=4. The Operation Equivalency Puzzles help students practice identifying equations for a particular number (2+1=3, 3+0=3, ). Playing Addition and Subtraction Interactive Games on the computer makes learning fun. The Factor Triangles will make learning multiplication a breeze. Geometry will lose its mystery when students use the Build & Learn Geometry Kit and Geometry in the Real World Photo Magnets.
Unlike programs for students performing below grade level, enrichment classes do not receive special funding.
The school provides a math curriculum. However any additional materials come out of my pocket. It is vital that my kids are challenged because the new Common Core Standards have increased the the expectations for student mastery. What was once considered a second grade skill is now expected of first grade students. I want to give my kids every opportunity to meet these high standards.
