Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My evolving 21st century, school library serves an eager to learn and an inquisitive student population of almost 700 students from PreK through 5th. We are a Title I, Turnaround school with a 100% free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch population. Our transiency rate is roughly 39.1 which is significantly higher than the district average. Our ELL population is almost 50%. We have Primary and Intermediate Resource & three self-contained special education programs-primary autism class, intermediate LIF class, and intermediate SEC (Severe Emotional Challenges) class. Embedded in all learning for all learners is that, above all else, our differences and diversity, who we are and how we learn, is to be celebrated and shared. Students are encouraged to follow their passions, believe in themselves, use their strengths, and look out for each other.
Our library not only emphasizes print and digital skills, but also social, cooperative, and creative thinking skills, which are needed for my 21st Century Learners to be successful.
WISER is the guiding acronym in our library instruction. It stands for Wonder, Investigate, Synthesize, Express, and Reevaluate. This acronym guides all our work as these are skills needed to be lifelong, contributing members of any community.
My Project
Our Library embraces the whole community. When students from our self contained classes come to Library, working on social & behavior skills meeting their IEP goals and objectives, with their classmates and peers from general education classes is our main goal.
These fun, hands-on activities will allow students in our self contained classes to work on their goals, with their peers, using materials that are unique to time in Library !
All of the materials have a tie in aspect to our STEAM theme as a school next year. The different materials will allow stations to be set up and rotated through helping to increase social and behavior skills in addition to pre-literacy and literacy abilities.
