Mrs. Rubio from Fort Worth TX is requesting Reading Nooks, Desks & Storage through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students materials to create an engaging and challenging Makerspace! We are requesting an All-Purpose Teaching Cart to keep all the materials organized and easily accessible, as well as coding activity sets and snap circuits.
Our students are curious, bright, hard-working scholars who struggle every day against the obstacles of poverty. They attend a school where more than 80% have been classified as economically disadvantaged. A high percentage of our students are English Language Learners and are part of Hispanic immigrant families from first to third generation. I have met all of their families, and I know first-hand how hard they work to provide a better future for their children. I also know, however, how difficult it is to compete academically when there are so many obstacles to navigate.
As their school librarian, it is my job to prepare them to the best of my ability to succeed in their academic journey to become the doctors, lawyers, teachers, police officers, firefighters, and scientists they have all told me they hope to be some day.
We have high expectations for all of them, despite their challenges, and we know that in order to prepare them to beat the odds, we must all work together to provide them as many cross-curricular learning opportunities as possible.
I am helping our school put together our first-ever Makerspace! We plan to house it in the school library and to set up a schedule so all students have access to the space at least once a week.
Makerspaces allow students to explore, create, build, prototype, and test ideas.
They are an opportunity to tinker and to apply cross-curricular skills from all subject areas. The materials we are requesting will make it possible to store, organize, and make accessible building supplies for our students.
We are also requesting coding and robot activity sets, magnetic tiles, Rubik's cubes, and coding board games. We will reinforce 21st century skills for our students and give them experience with a type of exploration which is not always found in a traditional classroom setting.
