Help me give my students graphic novels and multicultural books where the characters look and act like them! The mechanical pencils are an earned reward for being safe, respectful, and responsible.
My students and I are part of a wonderful Title I school where a number of our students arrive not speaking any English at all. Many of their parents require translators to communicate, and our classrooms are inclusive; that means some of these students have disabilities varying from physical and/or intellectual delays, to children who receive mental health services due to extreme poverty and/or trauma.
Our students come from very diverse socioeconomic households which include everything from "traditional" family units; to foster family homes; to those who struggle with homelessness.
We, the teachers, always try to make sure each and every student, no matter what their situation, has everything they need to thrive. Our students speak more than 35 different languages, and more than three-quarters of the students come from low-income homes.
I greet each student by name and welcome them to my reading and writing class, and everyday is a new day. Our community focuses on learning and growing together. I love what I do, and look forward to providing them with daily opportunities to read rewarding books.
My Project
This year I want to motivate my students to become lifelong readers.
Graphic Novels and Multiracial Books engage and focus students because they are funny, visual, and have characters that look and act like my readers.
These books will enhance the print-rich classroom that I have strived to create. My classroom library is a place were students really enjoy laying on the carpet and reading independently! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for these opportunities to read. All of these books were chosen with my students in mind; I have watched them over the last five months read titles similar to these. Students will be able to choose their own books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading.
They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
