Markers May Be Dry... But Student Thinking Is Not!

My students need more markers to mark down their thinking! The dry erase are so they can continue to solve math problems and show their work! The Mr. Sketch are for various activities and they smell!

My Students

My students are a fun, wonderful group of third graders. I have the honor of working with and learning from them each day and would not want to do anything else. They are my passion.

My students are diverse in many ways.

There are various family structures present, many low income households, military families, and families from different cultures. My students vary in their academic levels and interests as well. However, they all benefit from learning through positive experiences which is what I try to provide. My goal is to have a classroom community where students feel welcome each day and enjoy learning!

My Project

Both whiteboard markers and smelly Mr. Sketch markers are used almost daily in my classroom! Students are often using whiteboard dry erase markers in math to show their work and problem solve. The whiteboards and markers are also fabulous because they can easily travel around the room for small group work and be easily visible for me to see the students' work and answers from a distance. However, the daily use does cause the markers to dry out.

Several students are experiencing dried out markers at this time of the year and my extra supply is already dwindling.

Students then have to turn to paper and pencil. You can see the disappointment on their little faces when I have them get the scrap paper. Paper and pencil is not as fun for the students because let's be honest... who doesn't love writing with markers on a whiteboard?! Also, paper and pencil is more wasteful because the paper cannot be reused as many times as the whiteboard and marker can. With your support, students will be able to focus on their work and not the marker dilemma.

The Mr. Sketch scented markers are used by students (and myself) to check each others' work and give "smelly smileys" for a job well done! Students love to use this special tool to "be like the teacher" and give their peers positive feedback! Also, their are various instructional routines where students utilize markers to record their thinking, such as Gallery Walks and Chalk Talks where they are recording their ideas on large paper. I love to allow them to use my special "smelly markers" as an added component during these activities.

We appreciate your support in helping to keep the student thinking and work flowing... and not letting it dry out like our markers!
