Our students here at the school are a unique bunch. They are typically students who are expelled from other schools in the county for one reason or another, and they struggle with many issues, possibly more than the average student. A few are voluntary, who desire a more personalized and student-focused education because the population is smaller and thus creating a high student-teacher ratio. There are a host of differences in this school compared to the rest of the county's schools, like student turnover rates, a fluctuating population, interrupted curricula, and mixed grades in one class, to name a few.
These students deal with a lot of pressures, which they are learning to cope with and utilize to their advantage.
They also tend to be the overlooked, the ones who need the most attention and should receive the same resources as the more funded schools. I teach art, which requires art materials. There is a limited selection of media to explore, which can be tough because each individual might excel at one form over another which may not be offered. I want them to have that chance.
My Project
The art projects I want them to make will utilize multiple color markers and some precise black markers. They will test their ability to create shadows and highlights to make two-dimensional shapes appear like forms, and assign appropriate or aesthetically pleasing color palettes to the compositions to create a final, polished piece.
There will be at least five projects that can utilize the markers in the Beginning, Intermediate, Proficient and Advanced classes of art at my school.
In addition to the markers, acrylic paints can be used for added depth and a mixed media feel, and the palette spatulas are great for mixing colors without messing up the brushes.
