My Project

Our school will be hosting Author/Illustrator, Maris Wicks. This project will provide engaging books for every classroom by Maris Wicks before her visit. Maris Wicks is a writer and illustrator of science comics, as well as a self-proclaimed gigantic nerd. She has written, drawn, and colored comics for First Second Books, New England Aquarium and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, as well as SpongeBob Comics, Marvel Comics, and DC Comics. This project provides copies of her latest book, You and the Bowerbird for every Pre-K- 2 class, and copies of Coral Reefs: Cities of the Ocean and Human Body Theater for the 3-5 classes.

Our Community School is Maine's most ethnically diverse school. The school's amazing international student body represents more than 30 nationalities! Within the school, 50% of the 420 students are English Language Learners, and almost 75% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Our diversity is seen as an asset as we capitalize upon our knowledge and build on our strengths. These books will help inspire curiosity as we meet an outstanding role model for learning.
