My Students
Our school is a Title I school, with all students receiving free lunch. Additionally, there are forty languages spoken at our school. Each student enters the classroom with varying needs, abilities and cultural experiences.
With the growing number of residents in our catchment area, our school building is currently overcrowded with classrooms exceeding 30 students each.
My students are hardworking, caring and independent thinkers! They love borrowing books from the classroom library and discovering new books. They become excited when they discover new books of their favorite genres. However, our classroom library currently lacks proper representation of student cultures, interests, and reading levels.
My Project
In fourth grade, students are tasked with reading independently at various times throughout the school day. From the start of the year, students are encouraged to "give books a chance" and build their silent reading stamina.
Currently, many of our classroom library books are outdated and worn out. The books from this project will be used to fill our classroom library with new, culturally-relevant and exciting books! When students find genres of books that they enjoy and are on their reading level, they become more motivated to read independently. These books will be enhance our classroom library and provide students with opportunities to find books that meet both their interest and independent reading levels.
