I am a third and fourth grade teacher at a small elementary school in the East Village. I teach all academic subjects to an extremely diverse group of students, in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, native language, and special education needs.
This year in social studies, our class has been studying Eastern Woodlands Indians. As the year continues, we will move on to the Age of Exploration. During that unit, I plan to do an in-depth study of maps and geography. Having large, pull-down maps of the world and the United States on which we could write would be a huge benefit. We need an up-to-date globe so that students can see the relationship between a flat map and the actual shape of the world. These resources will also be very useful for our frequent discussions of current events around the world.
The pull-down maps will be invaluable. They will familiarize students with maps in general, through geography games and whole-class activities, such as finding different latitudes and longitudes, and calculating scale. They will allow us to draw and discuss explorers' routes. They will also help students to see the relationship among different parts of the world.
The globe will also provide a vital resource in helping children understand how a flat map represents the world. I have often found that for children this age, it can be quite difficult for them to understand that the tiny piece of Russia visible next to Alaska on the left side of a flat map is the same Russia that appears on the right. A globe can help clear up such difficulties easily.
I have noticed that children, like many adults, are naturally drawn to maps and globes. They love to find their own location and place that sound familiar. Because of their visual appeal, maps and globes are inviting not only to academically proficient students, but also to those who are learning disabled. I hope to build upon my students' innate interest in these resources in order to support my teaching.
I anticipate that with these supplies, our study of explorers and our daily discussions of current events will become more meaningful and memorable experiences for the whole class.
