It's awful to feel lost! My students need maps in the classroom in order to find their way around the United States and the world. Teaching social studies is extremely difficult without maps as resources.
The majority of my students are from immigrant families from all over the world: Asia, Africa, Europe, and Central America.
They are so excited and proud to be new citizens of this country, but are equally proud of their heritage and background. We have a true multicultural classroom and are building understanding and caring through shared stories, experiences, and language.
My Project
These resources are critical to our studies in elementary school. Our current study of the Age of Exploration is limited by our inability to map out the voyages of the explorers. The Democratic and Republican primaries are coming up and these maps will allow us to track the progress of the elections across the country. We will be able to follow major events in the world (and be able to see where things are happening). While access to the Internet is helpful for "seeing" places, it's not the same as being able to physically trace routes, point to countries of origin, and understand how history plays out across the lands.
Your donation to this project will have a broad impact on my students now and in the future.
They need to have a clear sense of their place in space. Maps help them understand how the world is set-up, how boundaries change, how nations develop (by comparing current maps to old ones), and allows them to dream of places to go and people to see!
