Do you remember learning about the world and how people lived, ate, worked and played? Can you imagine what it would be like to learn about the world by the variety of shoes people wear or by the types of homes found around the world? How curious!
My young eager multicultural, multi-ethnic kindergartners are a rainbow of colors from all over the world within a newly formed K-8 school of nearly 900 that embraces 36 languages.
This school houses an all school autism inclusion program and contains a developmental preschool and transitional kindergarten, plus a Head Start preschool. My students are eager to learn about their world. My classroom lacks both a United States and World Map. I have an outdated globe. My students ask frequent questions as I try to submerge them into different worlds through foods, books, sights and sounds but I lack the necessary resources like current maps and globes to bring it all to life!
My Project
These maps and globes would bring the world just that much closer to my young students. My globe is so outdated that the color of the ocean is sand--just think how confusing that is for a young learner! Our world is getting smaller but my learners have limited concepts for my classroom lacks current ways of displaying it to my students! I want to show them how you need to travel, whether by train or plane or boat and why! I want them to appreciate other cultures and countries! I want to interest them in other cultures by learning how people live according to the shoes they wear or the houses they live in! These starting points would trigger discussions on reasons and rationales that would further my students' understanding about the world itself!
You would bring the world just that much closer to my young vibrant kindergartners!
My students are so eager to learn and discover the world! I have traveled to China, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico and have artifacts, books, foods and visuals but I lack an updated map and globe that could solidify all the information I share with my eager to learn students! You would provide that essential link to looking at the world with fresh new eyes and widening perspectives!
