Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our Title I school is located in Southern California and is surrounded by three correctional facilities. This year, our school was funded, allowing us to give every student a free breakfast and lunch. Our school's population is around 400 students with various ethnic backgrounds.

Approximately 14% of our school population are children who are in the foster care system.

We also have a large number of homeless families who live in motels/hotels and broken down travel trailers that do not have running water or working electricity. Often, our students come to school without having had a warm meal or a consistent place to lay their heads and sleep.

My amazing class is full of energetic, sweet, and smart students within the grade levels of 3rd through 5th. Our class has been designed as a mild to moderate Special Academic Instruction (SAI) setting that has students with disabilities ranging from Autism to Emotionally Disturbed. We are a self-contained, full day special needs class with children who love to use all different types of modalities to learn!

My Project

Within my special needs classroom, we are continuously working on motor skills. Whether it be fine or gross motor skills that we are practicing, my students' enthusiasm diminishes when practicing with the same intervention items. Typically using river stones to work on balance and space, my kids are bored! With this manual pitching machine and baseballs, my students will be challenged once again. They love sports and are very competitive. We will be practicing our skills while getting exercise and becoming fit! Not to mention, physical education standards will be met along with preparing my students for the physical fitness test at the end of the year.
