Manipulatives to Measure

My Project

I work in a Title I school in a large public school district. Year after year we feel crammed to get moving through the curriculum and oftentimes don't make it to all the essential standards students need to understand before moving on to the next grade level. This year I'm working to build hands-on tools that can be used as centers to help students get exposure to core content before moving onto the next grade level. It is essential for students to learn abstract concepts such as measurement. It is important to give students hands-on tools to explore. This project is centered around getting those hands-on tools into the 8 classrooms that I support.

The purpose of this project is to get hands-on manipulatives into the hands of students and teachers to give tangible learning experiences.

This project includes the Gallon Measurement Set, Safe-T Weight Set, and other math manipulatives to help students teach capacity. The sets will be able to be used as a math station for students to practice seeing how many cups, pints, and quarts there are in gallons and the reverse. They can also be used to help students understand the metric system. Additionally, this project will have four sets of fraction measuring cups. I plan to use these in bins where students can actually measure different real-life objects and see how parts are in a whole using real-life applications. This project will also have a hands-on tool to help students in fifth-grade practice volume in meaningful ways. Instead of just learning the algorithm students will have a hands-on tool to help them understand how many units are in a figure by actually building three-dimensional figures.
