This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

One of the biggest challenges of 3rd grade is math. We finish developing foundational concepts and skills around addition and subtraction and we start laying the next layers of foundation for important new math concepts like multiplication, divsion, and fractions. With all of these concepts comes math vocabulary that can add an extra layer of difficulty for English language learners, like many of my students, in the classroom.

Math manipulatives help students make sense of challenging problems, demonstrate their understanding, and model their thinking for others.

Having access to these kinds of hands-on learning tools is especially important for neurodivergent students and students who are learning English as a second language. I have many such students in my class this year and I am sure to have many more in the future. With the boxes, base ten blocks, number lines, and counting cubes from this project, my students will develop and stronger foundation in mathematics that will help them succeed throughout elementary school, middle school, high school, and beyond.
