This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a diverse Title I classroom with 24 outstanding students who are enthusiastic about school and engaged in learning. During play time, several of them like to play "teacher," with one student pretending to be the teacher and other students listening to and participating in his or her lesson. Playing "teacher" reinforces the skills I teach them.

My students love to learn through play.

I incorporate manipulatives and games into as many whole-group and small-group instructional activities as I can. I love adding games for literacy and math to my instructional repertoire.

My Project

Throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many educational programs pivoted to virtual learning. Virtual learning is rarely ideal, especially in early childhood when children need face-to-face socialization and access to manipulatives for hands-on learning. It is very difficult to duplicate such experiences in a virtual setting.

The COVID-19 pandemic began when my current kindergarten students were preschool age.

All of their school experience up until now has been impacted by the pandemic. Some students have not had access to hands-on learning materials for math and literacy until this school year.

The materials I requested provide students with opportunities to build key skills in literacy, math, and play in fun, engaging ways.
