Manipulative Fun

My students need building manipulatives to practice fine motor skills, parallel play, and socialization skills.

My Students

Since you change people everyday, change them for the better-Aubrey C. Daniels

My students are in the Jumpstart Program which is a language based, self contained PreK classroom for children who have been diagnosed with autism and other developmental delays.

Within the class we are very scheduled and constant. Students get one on one teaching and group instruction. We learn about PreK basics; colors, numbers, letter, and letter sounds. Teachers within the program facilitate language by requiring students to ask for the things they want. Students in the classroom learn social skills through play and how to appropriately play with one another. Many of our student have sensory needs which means that they need to touch and manipulate things within the classroom a certain way. Free play is an important time for them to explore and create on their own.

My Project

Students with autism needs many different toys to manipulate and build with. Manipulation toys allow for students to practice fine motor skills that they may lack. Also, providing children with autism with a variety of toy choices allows for them to have the opportunity to decide what they want to play with, which helps them to practice attending to a task.

My students will benefit from the selected manipulation toys in many ways.

Fine motor skills will be practiced, social skills taught, along with language and communication skills. These manipulation toys can also be used for block design, matching, and visual perception activities.
