Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a crazy group of kids! They are full of stories, both written and unwritten. I have students from every part of life, who have experienced things unimaginable, and who are still learning that they have the power to change their world.

I love my students' energy, passion, enthusiasm, and grit; I want to make sure these traits are encouraged rather than stifled.

These kids look to their teachers as role models, safe havens, and confidants. They encourage me to be a better person and push me to be a better teacher to meet their needs.

My Project

I am a new teacher working on building a classroom library. I want to include a graphic novel and manga section for my students to select from.

Manga and graphic novels offer a visual and written perspective of different cultures, values, worlds, and challenges.

Students are given role models that utilize friends and teachers as support, learn to deal with major life issues, and really need to believe in themselves!

Reading for fun can have just as big of an impact as assigned reading; reading increases vocabulary, exposes students to varied grammar and sentence structures, and broadens their understanding of the world.

Many of my students are aspiring artists. Seeing different art styles and forms is a great way to pique their interest and show them new ways of drawing.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
