This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are rising 8th graders in ELA and ELD. Last year I was their 7th-grade teacher. The students are ethnically diverse. Incomes vary from students with no homes to others who are middle class. The average reading level is 5.5. About 1/5 of the students are English language learners. To build excitement and awareness around reading, last year the English Department promoted a reading challenge among the different English classes. Students could select a book of their choice and read for at least 15 minutes a day and then write a summary in a log.

When it came to book selection, there was a tidal wave of students clamoring for graphic novels and manga.

They really enjoyed these books and they would ask for more of the same. Sadly there were never enough.

My Project

As a middle school English teacher during the pandemic, I quickly saw that many of my students didn't have access to physical books. I directed them to eBook resources but my students didn't have their own computers. Others were getting eye strain from all the screen time. My goal this summer is to get books in the hands of about 50 of my most at-risk students.

The average reading level at my school is 5th grade.

Students can easily be discouraged by books that they feel are too hard for them. But they do like graphic novels, manga, comics, and teen novels. I carefully curated a selection of titles that would excite them. Research shows that these materials are beneficial in helping students not only improve their reading skills but to instill the fun and joy of reading.

Once the books arrive, I will contact parents and arrange a way to distribute the books at a location at the school. I will set up some fun Zoom calls so students can talk about their books to their peers. Any books that are leftover or returned will be used for an after school reading club -- the Comic Lounge.
