Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

My students are incredible. I may be a bit biased, but I really believe that I get to teach the best students ever. I work primarily with our bilingual population, and I am so lucky to get to spend my days teaching (and learning myself!) from these young adults. They work so hard to improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in English on a daily basis, and I appreciate the positive attitudes that they bring to our classroom each and every class period.

One thing that I have noticed about my students, no matter where they are in their language-journey, is that they love manga and anime.

On the days in which they get 20 minutes for silent reading, the manga is always the first to be checked out. They are voracious in their desire to see what happens next, and I get to watch them consume every new series that we get. Not only do they want to read during class, they also check out books to take home with them. This is a win-win for me, as more time on literacy means less screen time AND they are engrossing themselves in the plots outside of school!

In order to find just the right novels, I enlisted the help of one of my most avid manga-lovers. She went through and found series that are "school appropriate" and would be a good fit for our expanding classroom library. It is my hope to get this project funded before the summer, because little would make me happier than students requesting to borrow books over break.
