Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

My students are LOVING telling me about the Manga books they want to see in our new Book Vending Machine that we are currently using in conjunction with our PBIS - Positive Behavior - reward system. Currently, we do not have any Manga books in the vending machine, and students are constantly asking "where are the Manga books?" Unfortunately, I do not have the budget to buy what my students want and what I know will fly out of the vending machine. This is disappointing for me and them.

Manga helps students with visual intelligence better process what they're reading and helps increase their literacy comprehension skills.

Graphic novels and Manga might have fewer words than a traditional book, but the rate of "rare-special" words is higher, helping students understand standardized testing-level words.

Many students unintentionally use Manga as a springboard to reading traditional books, and with the number of reluctant readers I have who want to use PBIS points to get a Manga book from the vending machine, this project will go a very long way to accommodating them.
