Art Teacher for predominantly low income High School has no money for art supplies!!!
NO ART SUPPLIES!!!!
Three weeks ago I was put into a new school in the heart of our city in a lovely predominantly African-American, low-income high school. I arrived and was told there was no money left to order more supplies. We have no pencils, we share a bin of crayons (amongst 5 classes of around 30). We have three rulers... you get the point.
The students have been great and are very positive young adults. I have had nothing but good experiences since I came here. The kids are friendly, happy, warm and want to experience with different art materials. Their former teacher taught here for 45 years and would only do lettering projects with them! They need some more exposure... please help!
This is a project I've done in the past and all students took off and loved it. It's based in design, abstract art, and decorative art. It's something that all students can succeed at and has also been used in art therapy. Many of our students have experienced crime related deaths in the family and economical struggles and I know they can benefit from this healing project.
The Mandala is a circular design and can be found in many different cultures throughout the world. Tibetan monks create sand mandalas and then blow them away to suggest life's impermanence. It can be seen as a symbol of circles of life, family, community, seasons, galaxies, etc. The main objective is to use white pastel on black paper and try to create the illusion of light coming from the center illuminating the mandala. Students use organic or geometric shapes in a repetitive design inside a circular form. The results are always unique to the individual and stunning to behold.
Please give the necessary funds to help these children not only have a wonderful experience with the art materials, but also to go inside themselves and divulge they're inner intangible light and love onto paper.
