I am a full-time social worker in a large public high school. The student population is racially and socioeconomically diverse. The students I work with are receptive to my efforts to teach them life skills. Even though many come from troubling situations they are open to learning strategies and life skills in my counseling sessions. I am seeking new and innovative resources such as the Social Emotional Learning Notebooks and 5 minute Activities to assist me in this effort.
Many of my students grow up in communities that reinforce an eye for an eye, a code of the street mentality.
They often do not know how to express their feelings and emotions appropriately. The goal is to teach them social/emotional self-awareness and socially and legally appropriate conflict management and problem-solving skills. I will use the requested resources on social and emotional learning to teach students the Ruler System, Meta Moments, and how to survive in their communities and schools by learning to recognize, understand, label, express, and regulate their emotions without resorting to street justice and or the use of violence.
The RULER system is an effective tool established by Yale University and was used primarily with younger kids. I have found that many of our high school students need such training. I am seeking more sophisticated materials geared toward helping high school students learn effective ways to manage their feelings thus preventing potentially dangerous occurrences in school and within their communities.
At this school, more than 50 % of our students are Black and Latino and more than 50% come from low-income households. Many have experienced acts of violence some of which have resulted in gang violence. Teaching students how to recognize and regulate their emotions without resorting to violence can potentially save many lives, and will result in a more peaceful school and a healthier overall community environment.
