This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an early childhood special education inclusion teacher in a Pre-Kindergarten classroom at an elementary school. My students with disabilities are fully included into the general education classroom and curriculum. Our students range in ages from 3-5 years old.

The children in my program with special needs have been identified as having a range of disabilities from autism, Downs Syndrome, developmental delays, speech and language impairments, and orthopedic impairments.

It is essential for me to provide them with access to all the developmentally appropriate activities along side their typical peers. My school is located in a high poverty neighborhood and a lack of funding requires that teachers spend their own money to provide many of the resources needed to their students.

My Project

I will be changing classrooms next year and my room will not have a classroom carpet. Young children need a space to call their own during floor time, music and movement, and literacy activities. A circle time rug is where we sing, dance, and act out all of our stories and nursery rhymes. Having a rug that has a space for each of my students will help them respect each others' boundaries and learn to keep their hands and feet to themselves. I picked this rug with animals and alphabet squares because my students love singing and acting out songs and stories about animals. Not only will this rug be functional, but it can become part of our daily activities. My students can move like their animals, make the sounds of their animals, learn letter awareness and make letter-sound connections just by coming in and taking a seat on our new classroom carpet. I am also asking for a set of outdoor/indoor signs for my students to use as they pretend to drive ride-on cars and bikes on our path.

I want my students to have as many opportunities to experience and participate in the performing arts.

Teachers need to find ways to embed these opportunities within their daily instruction so that their imaginations continue to grow and creativity continues to be valued. This carpet will give my young learners a place to roar like a lion, wiggle like a worm, and fly like a flamingo. Thank you so much for your generosity!
