Mallet Madness for Our Music Classroom

Help me give my students two new Orff Alto Xylophones with mallets, xylophone curriculum and a boom box with cd and bluetooth capabilities for our music classroom!

My Students

My 700, 1st-6th grade students, living in the heart of Utah County, are wonderful and creative music makers! They love hands-on, active, engaging projects that challenge them and allow them to think outside the box! I love their curiosity and their bravery as they try new things in my music classroom. For many students, music class gives them a chance to be successful at something even though they may struggle with other subjects. I love watching their faces light up while learning and understanding new concepts. My reward for teaching is their love of music.

My Project

My music students are passionate about music and they love learning new songs and rhythms. These supplies will help us explore melodically in a hands-on way.

During covid, our music learning was interrupted to the point where we couldn't sing in class, couldn't share instruments and couldn't make a circle to play music games.

It's been a difficult few years but things are looking up! These requested resources will enrich my students lives and their learning. During covid, my students have been hit with feelings of anxiety and doubt. Using their creativity is one way to rise about these feelings and give them confidence. These items will provide my classroom with hope and inspiration as well as a safe place to make mistakes and learn to persevere.

Our music room has very little in regards to melodic instruments. In fact, we only have one alto and bass xylophone. Students rarely get an opportunity to play because we simply don't have enough to go around. My students have never had the opportunity to accompany a song with a melodic ostinato or improvise a melody on an instrument.

The use of melodic instruments in music class teaches children tonal and listening skills, collaboration and participation. As a bonus, they are incredibly fun to play and very rewarding! We play many rhythmic instruments throughout the year, but I know they'd love to explore melodically as well!

In addition to the xylophones, I would love to purchase a wonderful curriculum book filled with quality lessons from the wonderful music educator, Artie Almeida. I would also love to purchase a boombox for class. We don't have anyway to play cds or music through bluetooth in our classroom.
