"Grawwwwr!" yowls the angry fourth grade lion. Dreadlocks swirling around his face, the bathroom line has become the jungle and Malee its king. Luckily, the other students in my Drama Club are used to Malee's improvisational antics and nonchalantly watch as he pounces on prey attempting to hide against the lockers. Malee is a gifted actor from the fourth grade of our charter school in Engelwood, Chicago. He is full of life and curiousity, with a supportive mother who exposes him to as wide a spectrum of literature and theater as is possible within their means. Malee was rocketed from second to third grade mid-year because of his articulate and limitless mind. Summer is a dangerous place in Engelwood, especially without something to do. During the school year, students are kept in an extended day program as well as afterschool activities to deter involvement in crime and drugs. Enrollment in a summer drama program would challenge Malee's imagination and penchant for mischief in a crucial way. The Chicago Kids Company holds a summer musical theater camp on the north side of Chicago. Run for fourth through eighth grade students, Malee would be in his element with older students to look up to and to keep up with. The program offers experiences in all aspects of theater; set design, costumes, performance, auditioning, etc. Culminating in a full scale production, Malee's gift of acting would be maximized! The 'Summer Musical Theater Camp' of Chicago Kids Company runs five hours per weekday for two weeks. This grant asks for funding to send a talented young actor to the summer camp of his dreams, out of an area of destitution and violence and rocketed onto the stage to listen to the applause he deserves.
