My Students

A typical day in my classroom starts with a lot of moaning and groaning about reading, but ends in complete silence as the students discover their love for the new ideas that come alive out of books. I relish in this constant cycle of my students, and myself, falling in love with reading.

My students are like any other high school student: a lot too cool for school, a lot stubborn, and a lot curious.

It is this combination that I am able to capitalize upon and bring them into the wonderful world of reading. My students live in the Bronx borough of New York City, and go to school at a multi-school campus. Our school population is predominately composed of Latino and Black students, the entirety of which are on free or reduced-cost lunch.

My Project

Over my past two years of teaching, I have noticed that students perform the best when they have their own personal copies of books to take home with them. I've gone the route of class sets, but students never quite get as into the text. That being said, students will use the copies of their I am Malala books to supplement a larger unit on Women's Oppression in a variety of cultures. They will be able to take the book home to read independently so they are able to come to class to discuss Malala's memoir with their peers. It is my hope that through this unit, students will become more informed about the practices of a variety of cultures, and will use that knowledge to become activists for women's rights around the globe.

Having these books will make it easier for students to discuss the book.

The school year is short and we have a lot of information to cover. With the ability to read at home, we can spend classtime having more in depth conversations about the literature. Furthermore, the practice of taking a book home and reading independently will foster a greater sense of responsibility in our students.
