Help me give my students LCD writing tablets to replace the need for the paper and pencils many don't have, along with reusable bags filled with treats and stress-relieving putty.
Being forced into distance learning as opposed to the physical classroom has been a challenging adjustment for all. My students are members of one of the poorest communities in the nation. I will say that many people have stepped up to support in the best way we can. Meals are provided on weekdays at special sites for those that are able to get transportation there. In the last couple of weeks, my district has been able to get Chromebooks to all 6th through 8th graders (I'm truly grateful this includes my class) so that they can participate in our Zoom teaching classes and Google classroom work. My students are already behind their urban peers academically, and this situation further perpetuates the gap between the haves and the have nots.
My students thrive best when they are in a loving environment with a trusted adult, and for many, that adult was at their school.
I would love to be able to take the time to deliver care packages to my students with some useful supplies and treats. I want to remind them that I'm still here for them, that I still love them, and that we will get through this.
My Project
My middle schoolers are in the midst of adjusting to distance learning during this uncertain time. They are at an age that is particularly tough emotionally, and their situation is a lot to bear. I teach 12 students with IEPs along with their general education classmates. However, almost all of my class is behind grade level, and the gap between them and their suburban peers is growing due to this pandemic. I am the special education teacher that co-teaches the core subjects for these 28 students. I was accustomed to spending five periods a day with this group, and I have a strong and crucial connection with them.
My hope is to reassure my students of our connection and my love for them by delivering care packages with a helpful LCD writing tablet along with water, snacks, and stress-relieving putty.
My kids thrive most with positive relationships, and I do my best to connect with them virtually. However, being able to provide them with an academic tool and special gifts, while visiting them at their homes from a 6-foot distance could be crucial for mood, effort, and ultimately, success. The LCD writing tablet is like an electronic whiteboard. It will be used for answering questions in virtual classrooms to be held up to the screen, working out math problems, planning writing, and stress relieving doodling. I opted for a 15" large size so that my students will have enough room for their math problems and writing plans. Many students don't have a supply of paper and pencils in their homes. This will eliminate the need for that.
Right now, more than ever, my students need encouragement to keep learning, continue coming to virtual classes, submit Google classroom assignments, and know that they are loved by their teachers.
