Creating. Reading. Engaging. Collaborating. These are some of the activities I see our kids engage in everyday as they come to the library.
The kids at my school come from diverse backgrounds, from kids who receive free and reduced lunch, to kids who have everything they desire, but they are able to come together in the library to be creative and collaborative in order to learn.
They love to create and work together.
They want to make a mark on the world. They come to the library to find ways to make their mark, and I am always impressed by what they come up with. They will be our future, and the library is the place they can begin their journey.
My Project
For the past two years, the purpose of our library makerspace has been to provide a place for kids to freely create. And they have; kids use it during open hours when they need to de-stress, and classes use it when they need materials and a larger space to create. It has been amazing to see what the kids create when the space and materials are available for them, but we want to expand the purpose of the space: we want to “make with purpose.” We want to use our makerspace to create in order to serve the community.
We want to help our kids learn the importance of service learning and helping others in order to make our community stronger.
There are many groups in the community who need support. When we surveyed kids to see what they would like to help support, we got a wide range of answers, from helping the homeless in multiple ways, to making blankets and hats for babies, to supporting cancer patients with warm hats, to creating gift bags for our veterans and the elderly in nursing homes.
We want to provide materials such as sewing machines and crochet and knitting materials, along with the space and expertise, to help the kids make their ideas a reality, so they can grow into being contributing members of society who participate and serve in order to help create a stronger community. With your help, we can do this, and kids can begin serving their community in a positive way.
